MANILA, Philippines – Meralco coach Norman Black flew back from the United States early Thursday morning bringing the news that they have signed up former San Diego State stalwart Josh Davis as import for the coming PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Davis signing with the Bolts has essentially completed the list of imports strutting their wares in the mid-season PBA tourney that fires off Jan. 27 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
On Wednesday, three-year NBA veteran Daniel Orton committed to play for the Purefoods Star Hotshots upon the completion of his stint with the Sichuan team in the Chinese Basketball Association.
Others set to play in the Commissioner’s Cup are DJ Covington for Alaska Milk, Solomon Alabi for Barako Bull, Michael Dunigan for Ginebra, Chris Charles for Blackwater, CJ Leslie for Globalport, Peter John Lucas for Kia, Al Thornton for NLEX, Rick Jackson for Rain or Shine and Richard Howell for Talk n Text.
San Miguel Beer awaits words from Arinze Onuaku who got a call from the NBA after a remarkable showing in the NBA D-League Showcase Cup in Santa Cruz, California.
Black personally scouted Davis in the same NBA D-League event.
Davis was the last cut in the San Antonio Spurs roster for the current NBA season with the 6-foot-8 forward likened by scouts to his lookalike and play-alike Kawhi Leonard.
Coming out of the SDSU campus, Davis was nicknamed “Kawhi 2.0” for his rebounding skills and his profound likeness to the 2014 NBA Finals MVP.
Davis averaged 10.1 rebounds and 7.7 points in one year at SDSU after earlier stints with North Carolina State then with Tulane.
After his senior year at San Diego State, he joined Charlotte in the NBA Summer League where he put in 8.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. He finished three of seven games with double-double numbers.
He’s tapped in at Meralco primarily because of his great ability to get the rebounds.
