San Beda, EAC enter Fr. Martin Cup semis

MANILA, Philippines – The San Beda-A Red Lions and the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals turned back their rivals last Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 12th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament at the St. Placid gymnasium of the San Beda College-Manila campus in Mendiola.

Francis Abarcar and Nigerian Eugene Toda showed the way for the Red Lions, who prevailed over the National University Bulldogs, 76-69, this cagefest, which is supported by Bauerfeind supports and orthoses, and medical compression stockings, and Wang’s Basketball.

Gussy Bautista scored a buzzer-beating triple, allowing the Generals to escape with an 84-81 triumph over the Technological Institute of the Philippines Engineers.

Their wins allowed both the Red Lions and the Generals to barge into the semifinal round.

Abarcar struck with 14 points for the Red Lions while Toda made 13.

Two triples from Marcus Ejercito and Kyle Carlos in the last four minute gave the Red Lions a chance to move out of range during a decisive 8-0 run in the last period.

The Bulldogs have managed to threaten, 59-63, when San Beda’s binge allowed them to move away, 71-59, in the remaining 3:10.

Bautista showed the way with 17 points for the Generals while Francis Munsayac and Jorem Morada provided 14.

The Generals were lucky to have made it to the quarterfinals, according to commissioner Robert de la Rosa.

They beat Polytechnic University of the Philippines, 74-50, last Sunday, finished with a 4-3 win-loss record in Group B.

A better tiebreak card allowed them to join Ateneo and San Beda-A in the quarterfinal stage.
