CDC gets lots of tweets, tweaks

- Olmin Leyba -

MANILA, Philippines - Fans of the UAAP pep squads made Twitterverse abuzz with talks about the exploits of their favorite crews in the well-followed 2011 Cheerdance Competition.

With supporters religiously twitting updates and comments, the UAAP CDC and the diffrent teams led by champion UP Pep Squad reached as high as second in the top 10 worldwide trending topics of Twitter, the popular micro-blogging site, on D-day.

Discussions about #UAAPCDC were still hot a day after the contest, people continously giving their takes on the cheerdancers’ numbers.

A “Tweeter” who goes by the username stellaistellar was impressed by National University’s matador costume and vastly improved performance: “Parang hindi NU ang napanuod ko na nagperform ang galing na nila. :D sagot ba ni Henry Sy costume nila?”

Sy is, of course, the tycoon whose family now owns NU.

Some could not hide their disappointment with specific crews.

Mini-blogger akoposiRenee wrote after seeing runner-up DLSU Animo Squad: “DLSU more technical this year, but routine still peppered with traditional cheers.”

Picking up on the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe’s Cross getup and Gregorian chant-hymned number, mariusoczon twitted: “Forgive me Father for I have sinned. But I think the pontifical & royal university will not bring home the bacon today.”

Well, there were props to the teams naturally, especialy triumphant UP Pep Squad and its blonde top.

“Blonde is definitely not dumb. And legally WINNING! Haha! Congrats UP Pep Squad! #UAAPCDC Champions! :D UNIBERSIDAD NG PILIPINAS!” so said chocolatedazed.

ANNEtonov praised the Maroons’ Madonna-inspired routine: “Great tosses, extensive stunts, neat & continuous execution. What a jaw dropping performance from UP! They’re more than deserving! “

We know that the cheerdance gig was a Twitter hit when Azkals manager Dan Palami, a man who does not twit regularly, jumped in the discussions, asking if “anybody know how to send an invite to the UP CDC team?”

“Would love to see the UP Pep Squad perform in the Azkals vs Nepal game on Oct 11, Rizal stadium!” Palami wrote.

The cheerdance performances immediately flooded file-sharing site youtube, with one posting of UP Pep Squad’s video already getting 93,613 views as of Monday, and social media site Facebook.

Moreover, the usual cheers and jeers abound in online community PinoyExchange, which hosts an open forum where visitors can post their thoughts on a variety of topics affecting Filipinos at home and around the world.

Midday Monday, the UP Pep Squad even was the top trending topic on Yahoo! Philippines, getting more searches than Mayweather vs Ortiz, Leonardo di Caprio, Samantha Sotto, and Miss World Philippines.

“Grabe talaga ang hype ng #UAAPCDC! Parang national holiday lol.” twitted nonsense021 .

A social event for a number of people, indeed.
