Mark rebounds for joint 8th

Grandmaster candidate Mark Paragua defeated Mikita Mayorau of Belarus (ELO 2324) to climb up from eighth to 12th places after eight rounds of the ongoing World Youth Chess Championship 2002 in Hersonissos, (Heraklio) Crete, Greece.

The 18-year old Paragua bounced back from a sorry loss in the hands of Matthew Cornette (ELO 2355) of France in the seventh round and improved his record to 5.5 points in the boys’ 18 and under category.

On the other hand, National Master Roderick Nava (4.5 points), who led the Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT) in the championship title in this year’s NCAA, settled for a truce with Alexander Utnasunov (ELO 2307) of Russia.

Earlier, Nava halved the point with Lucas Liascovich (2312) of Argentina in the seventh round of the boys’ 18 and under.

In other round 8th results, Letran bet Vic Neil Villanueva (4.5 points) lost to Dmytro Kononenko (ELO 2376) of Ukraine in the boys’ 14 and under, UE’s Nelson "ELO" Mariano III (4.5 points) also bowed to David Recuero Guerra (ELO 2082) of Spain, while Sto. Tomas, La Union kid Loren Brigham Laceste split the point with Mehyr Vladyslav (4.0 points) in the boys under-10.

In the distaff side, Caba, La Union pride Cheradee Chardine Camacho (3.0 points) beat Karmen Vourhvahaki of Greece in the girls under-10 while UE’s Aices Salvador (3.0 points) lost to Marionna Chiereki of Italy in the girls under 12.
