La Salle, UP top Unigames

BACOLOD City — De La Salle University and the University of the Philippines emerged the "winningest" contingents in the sixth University Games, which ended Sunday at the University of St. La Salle here.

DLSU and UP each won four titles while host St. La Salle took three.

Unigames newcomer San Sebastian College copped two titles – women’s volleyball and beach volleyball – while UNO-Recoletos, St. Francis of Assisi, De La Salle Dasmariñas, Far Eastern University, Ateneo de Manila, Foundation U and Silliman University had one title apiece.

UP won the titles in the men and women’s swimming, men’s table tennis and men’s taekwondo while De La Salle took home the men’s volleyball crown for the first time as well as men and women’s chess and women’s soccer.

St. La Salle captured the sepak takraw title and won also in women’s lawn tennis and taekwondo.

UNO-R grabbed the plum in women’s table tennis, DLSU-Dasmariñas in men’s athletics, Far Eastern U in women’s athletics, Ateneo in men’s lawn tennis. St. Francis in men’s basketball and Foundation in men’s beach volleyball.

Record Breakers

Twenty-two records —-13 in swimming and nine in athletics were broken in the week-long competition.

UP’s Ma. Veronica Christina Manotok led the record breakers by erasing four marks in women’s swimming while her teammates Timmy Chua and Bernard Datoc.

The new athletics record holders are Chantal Balani of DLSU (100-m and 200-m), Mercedita manipol of UE (1,500-m and 5,000-m), Ralph Soguilon of DLSU (200-m), Maristella Torres (long jump) and Roselyn Jamero (women’s discuss throw), both of FEU. Arniel Ferrera (men’s discus) and the DLSU 4x400-m relay squad.
