San Beda vs Lyceum rematch

MANILA, Philippines – Muling maghaharap ang nagdedepensang San Beda Red Lions at runner-up sa nakaraang taon Lyceum Pirates sa best-of-three Finals sa Season 94 NCAA basketball tournament matapos magwagi sa magkahiwalay na semifinal matches kahapon sa FilOil Flying V Center sa San Juan City.

Tinambakan ng second seed Pirates ang third seed Letran Knights, 109-85 para makopo ang unang finals slot habang sumunod naman agad ang top seed na Red Lions sa pamamagitan ng 83-72 panalo laban sa fourth seed Perpetual Help Altas para manatiling buhay ang pag-asa sa ikatlong sunod na titulo.

Sisimulan ng Red Lions at Pirates ang kanilang ikalawang sunod na best-of-three championship showdown sa Nobyembre 6 sa Mall of Asia Arena sa Pasay City. Ang second game ng Finals ay sa Nov. 12 sa MOA pa rin at kung kinakailangan ang Game 3 ay sa Nov. 15 sa parehong venue.

“Ang kaibahan sa Finals namin sa Lyceum noong nakaraang taon is that now they (Pirates) have enough experience already. So, it’s going to be different now. I’m sure, it’s a tough match-up between the two teams,” sabi ni San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez na hangad ang pang-22nd title ng San Beda sa NCAA.

Sa iba pang laro, matapos lumamang sa 56-55 ang Pirates,  humataw sina CJ Perez, Mike Nzeusseu at Jesper Ayaay ng 15-0 run sa kalagitnaan ng ikatlong yugto para lumayo sa 71-55. Nadagdagan pa ang problema ng Letran sa leg injury ni JP Calvo kaya lalong nagpiyesta ang Pirates at lumobo ang agwat sa 37 puntos, 105-68.

“They are a well-coached team. We have to make sure to put them out of their comfort zone. And we did it by bringing CJ off the bench. What’s important for us is we have to dictate the tempo. These kids are really driven not only for the school but for everyone who supports us,” sabi ni Lyceum coach Topex Robinson.

Umani si Nzeusseu ng 23 puntos at 17 rebounds habang ang reigning MVP na si Perez ay tumapos ng 19 puntos.
