Mapapanood na sa mga sinehan sa December 6 ang kuwento nina Father Guz Saenz at Father Jerome Lucero, ang dalawang Jesuit priests na naatasang lutasin ang pagpatay sa dalawang kabataang lalaki na hindi lang basta pinatay kundi tinanggalan pa ng internal organs at pagkatapos ay itinapon sa Payatas.
Ang Smaller and Smaller Circles na dinirek ng award-winning filmmaker na si Raya Martin ay base sa tinuturing na first Filipino crime novel na nanalo ng Grand Prize for the Novel in English noong 1999 sa Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature at best selling novel ng Filipina author na si F.H. Batacan.
Ang University of the Philippines Press ang unang nag-published ng novel noong 2002 at inilathala rin ang expanded edition ng New York-based publisher na Soho Press noong 2015.
Dahil sa intriguing characters, thrilling plot, and cinematic feel, naniniwala ang producer at writer na si Ria Limjap na ang Smaller and Smaller Circles ay karapat-dapat maging pelikula. Lalo na ngayon na ang tema at pangyayari sa kuwento ay nanatiling familiar sa ating lahat.
“Smaller and Smaller Circles was written in 1997, but the themes and images from the book are eerily relevant today,” sabi ni Limjap tungkol sa mga pangyayari na involved ang mga kabataang lalaki sa series ng patayan sa Metro Manila.
Para naman kay Direk Martin, kailangan itong mapanood upang mas mapag-aralan kung bakit “we always end up with the same issues almost two decades later.”
Dagdag pa ni Direk Martin na kabilang sa mga naidirek ay ang Independencia at Manila, “The American journalist James Fallows calls it ‘a damaged culture.’ We’ve never really confronted our issues, we just simply repeat cycle of violence and denial.”
Umaasa sina Limjap at Martin na magpapa-init ito sa usapin tungkol sa problema ng bansa na kapareho pa rin sa problema noong 1990s.
“Filipino audiences deserve to see all kinds of cinema. While certain forms will always be more popular, films that provoke critical thinking and raise awareness and providing entertainment, should also be enjoyed by the audience.
“Smaller and Smaller Circles’ is that kind of movie, a movie which tells a unique story that they might find entirely familiar,” sabi pa ng producer at writer ng pelikula na pinagbibidahan ng magagaling na actor na sina Nonie Buencamino as the forensic scientist Father Saenz and Sid Lucero as Saenz’ protégé, father Jerome Lucero.
Kasama rin sa pelikula sina Christopher de Leon, Ricky Davao, TJ Trinidad, Gladys Reyes, Alex Medina, Carla Humphries, Joy Viado at marami pang iba.
The movie is produced by TBA Studios, the film outfit behind Heneral Luna, Sunday Beauty Queen, Bliss and Birdshot. It is distributed by Columbia Pictures.
