Gin Kings aabangan sa Philippine Cup

MANILA, Philippines — Dahil sa kanilang pagkopo sa korona ng katatapos na 2019 PBA Governor’s Cup ay inaasahang lahat ng koponan ay tututukan ang Barangay Ginebra sa 2020 PBA Philippine Cup.

Isa na ang San Miguel Beermen, nagdomina sa na­sabing torneo sa huling limang taon, sa haharang sa mithiin ng Gin Kings na makapagtala ng back-to-back championship.

“We know it’s going to be tough. There’s going to be a lot of other teams have something to say about it, but we are going for it,” pahayag ni Ginebra head coach Tim Cone.

Huling naghari sa PBA Philippine Cup ang Gin Kings noong 2007 sa ilalim ng paggiya ni dating mentor Jong Uichico.

Ang nasabing titulo rin ang kulang sa koleksyon ng 35-anyos na si veteran point guard LA Tenorio.

Sa kabuuang 22 korona ng 62-anyos na si Cone ay apat lamang dito ang nakuha niya sa All-Filipino conference.

Huli niya itong napagwagian noong 2014 kung sa­an niya iginiya ang Purefoods franchise sa Grand Slam kasama sina two-time PBA MVP James Yap, Marc Pingris, PJ Simon at Joe Devance.

Bukod sa San Miguel, malakas din ang tsansa ng TNT Katropa, NLEX at NorthPort sa korona ng 2020 PBA Philippine Cup na magsisimula sa Marso 1.

Si five-time PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo pa rin ang babandera sa kampanya ng Beermen ni coach Leo Austria katuwang sina one-time PBA MVP Arwind Santos, Terrence Romeo, Alex Cabagnot, Chris Ross at Marcio Lassiter.

Pamumunuan naman nina Jayson Castro, RR Po­goy at Troy Rosario ang laban ng Tropang Texters nina Bong Ravena at active consultant Mark Dickel.

Hindi rin dapat balewalain ang kakayahan ng NLEX ni bench tactician Yeng Guiao, habang luma­kas ang NorthPort dahil sa pagdating ni 6-foot-8 Fil-German Christian Standhardinger.

Muli namang gigiyahan ni 2018 PBA No. 1 overall pick CJ Perez ang Columbian.

“There is still June Mar (Fajardo) and San Mi­guel, Talk ‘N Text (TNT Katropa) and their ability to beat you up and down the court from the peri­meter, NLEX is co­­ming in. So many teams getting better. NorthPort with (Christian) Standhardinger and (Sean) Anthony over there,” litan­ya pa ni Cone.
