Canon provides printing scholarships

MANILA, Philippines - This year, Canon extends its developmental thrust with an educational CSR program – the Don Bosco School of Printing scholarships.

In line with the company’s 15th year in the Philippines, Canon builds the educational experience of 15 students through a scholarship for the printing technician course.

Running from June 2012 to May 2013, the course covers a comprehensive curriculum on printing, general subjects such as Theology and Language, and basic recreational classes such as physical education, art, and music. Don Bosco School of Printing aims to shape students to become not only competent printing professionals, but also well-rounded and principled individuals.

Canon Business Imaging Solutions (BIS) group will shoulder the expenses of the scholarship, covering tuition fee for the school year, allowance for miscellaneous expenses such as meals, uniforms, and transportation.

Representatives of Canon visit the students every now and then to make sure that they are maximizing the benefits of the scholarship. Also, Don Bosco shares a monthly monitoring report on the scholars f performance in school.

Brother Conrad Lagaya, technical director of Don Bosco School of Printing, explained that the students undergo training inside the classroom, as well as outside for hands-on practical application. They get exposed to hard-core printing processes, which comprises the pre-press, press, and post-press stages.

“I’m hoping that the students will get a lot of training experience with Canon, and that they become ready and disposed for the industry,” he shared.

Canon executives, in turn, find reward in helping these students. “The youth represents the future,” Alan Chng, president and CEO of Canon Marketing Philippines, said.   “Children of today have the potential to do great things for society. It fs regrettable to see some of them lack the opportunity to develop this potential. So it fs our pleasure to able to help these students and, as a result, the general welfare.”

JojoBolima, director of Canon BIS Division, outlined additional plans to enrich this program:   “Canon has established a supplementary program called Reams of Hope, in which Canon will donate one peso for every ream of Canon business HG paper, A4 or letter-sized, sold from June 2012 to May 2013, in support of the students’ monthly allowance.”

Ultimately, the Canon BIS Group and Don Bosco School of Printing have the same goal – to provide proper technical education for less fortunate students. This strongly adheres to Canon’s corporate philosophy Kyosei – living and working together for the common good.
