DepEd’s K to 12 home

The theme of the series of our division management committee (ManCom) Meetings in Nueva Vizcaya has been centered on “Improving ARCA through the K to 12 CIA: towards ALL2 Learners Development.” ARCA means Access, Retention, Completion and Achievement. The theme can be further depicted through the contextualized framework (K to 12 Home) below.

Like the frontage of a house, the K to 12 ladder is grounded on the core values (MakaDiyos, Makatao, Makakalikasan at Makabansa) and braced with strong posts — the DepEd vision and mission.

As every child climbs the K to 12 ladder, he/she is guaranteed help for success to be ready to enter the door of opportunities “kolehiyo, trabaho at negosyo” after the senior high school.

The K to 12 children have different circumstances and these must be dealt with properly in the ALL2 Learners Development where ALL2 means the Advanced, the Least, the Lost and the Last. Every learner must be successful in the K to 12.

The CIA roof of the K to 12 House must be strong and firm too.  The CIA must be well understood, implemented, monitored and quality assured. The teachers can make the CIA happen with the technical assistance by the instructional leaders at the schools and the schools division office.

In the triangle CIA being the roof, the vertex C for Curriculum is about the curriculum guides (CG). All learners modules (LM) and teaching guides (TG) are based on the CG. So, it is basic that every teacher, school head, instructional leader must have a complete CG.  The CG is matrix-based detailing the following into columns:

Column I.  Major Topics/Content; Col. II.  Content Standards; Col. III  Performance Standards; Col. IV Learning Competencies; Col. V  Codes of the Learning Competencies and Col. VI  Learning Resources.

The vertex I for Instruction also stands for Differentiated Instruction (DI).  Everyone must understand that “no two learners are the same”…that all 44 learners in the classroom are different with different interests, with different multiple intelligences, with different learning styles.  So “one size fits all” will not work.  Learner profiling is important.

The vertex A for assessment is for assessing learning with the use of formative assessment (diagnostic or pre-assessment, assessment for learning, assessment as learning) and summative assessment (assessment of learning).  It is not goodbye to KPUP (Knowledge/Process/Understanding/Performance -Product) because KPUP is very obvious in the standards of the teaching-learning process. A class record therefore must capture all the forms of assessment.  This is the essence of DO 8, s. 2015.

The triangle as a geometric figure shows stability.  Thus, the triangle CIA must be stable.  Note that there are three line segments, namely:  CI, IA, CA denoting the relationship between C and I, I and A, C and A.  Therefore, the C, I, and A are inseparable.

Lesson planning must be logical.  It must follow the CIA interaction.  Hence, the general parts of the lesson plan must be Curriculum (major topics, content standards, performance standards, learning competencies, learning resources), Instruction (teaching-learning procedure highlighting differentiated                                                   instruction) which must be integrated with Assessment.

In compliance with DO 8, s. 2015 particularly on Before lesson proper; Lesson proper; After lesson proper; Add-on metacognition (teacher makes reflection about his/her teaching  practices).

Indeed, the K to 12 Home is a metaphor of the government’s love to its children as enshrined in the RA 10533 (K to 12 Law).  — Samuel R. Soliven, OIC, Office of the SDS, Schools Division Office, Nueva Vizcaya
