Bill seeks transpo discounts for students even on non-school days

MANILA, Philippines - Students may soon enjoy a 20-percent fare discount on all forms of public transport even on weekends and holidays once House Bill 1096 passes into law.

Bulacan Rep. Ma. Victoria Sy-Alvarado filed the bill which seeks to grant bona fide students travel discounts upon presentation of their identification cards or validated enrolment forms.

“The proposed grant is envisioned to lessen the impact of the current economic difficulties and assist parents and students in shouldering the transportation expenses relative to the rising cost of education in our country,” Sy-Alvarado said.

The lawmaker said the measure aims to benefit poor students who deserve assistance form the government.

Currently, student fare discounts are only possible through a memorandum circular by the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board. Sy-Alvarado said a law legalizing the discounts is necessary.

She said students should also be given discounts during non-school days where they conduct research and hold group studies.

“This is in recognition of the fact that during such days and periods, students return to their respective communities to assist their parents and at the same time to get their allowances for the succeeding school week,” Sy-Alvarado said.

Also covered in the measure are medical interns and those undergoing military trainings and specialized studies.
