Colors of Christmas
How difficult would it be to picture a red and green Christmas sans colors? Quite hard right? We decorate our house every year in red and green colors. And red and green are not the only colors that the holidays are synonymous with. White, gold, and blue fall on the list as well.
The prevalence of the combination of these colors associated with Christmas is important as far as the extent and depth of the celebration is concerned. Indeed the season is full of bright colors, so bright that if there is spiritual or religious connection to it or just a festive festival, the light spreads throughout the world.
Colors allow us to appreciate our surroundings' beauty and diversity. And with those colors come the connection of emotions: of commitment, enthusiasm, and determination. Such a depiction of colors, unique to human beings, is already part and parcel in social interactions.
But on Christmas, outside these dominant colors, there are also other colors symbolizing other human emotions. For example, black symbolizes the darkness of some of our brothers and sisters who were devastated in many parts of Luzon by the twin typhoons. The darkness of this kind positions them in a sea of confusion, with uncertainty as to how the year will end and what the new year has in store for them.
Brown for the impassable muddy roads, and the barely potable water for them. They're waiting for the peace and quiet to return to normal, and we're all waiting for that to happen.
We hope, deep inside us, to change the colors of Christmas, to paint it with the colors of hope, affection, and unity. Beyond the colors of lavishness, we can also remember those whose Christmas is not the same as before.
The colors of hope and compassion are in the eyes of the victims of calamities, in the eyes of orphan children who long for their parents, in the eyes of our deprived brothers and sisters who for the longest period of time, have not received so much kindness and love as we have enjoyed in our lives, caregivers of families who have lost their jobs, victims of injustice. They are also the true beneficiaries of what Christmas has to offer. Let the colors be mirrored in our hearts as we celebrate Christmas and beyond.
Despite these situations, when we see glittering Christmas lights, lanterns, decorations in various colors, we still look back on past celebrations full of joy and hope. And in these tough times, we need to rekindle the light of hope which will color our lives for a bright tomorrow. Let us all anchor our faith by the colors, and reflect on the coming of the Great Messiah.
