EDITORIAL - Our valuable Muslim allies

EDITORIAL - Our valuable Muslim allies

Just recently, the leaders of Muslim communities all over Cebu and the police signed a manifesto of cooperation to improve the peace and order situation in the island.

Although we can cite no deterioration of peace and order in the island between people of differing religions, it’s easy to surmise the signing was done following the recent bombings that killed over a dozen people in Jolo, Sulu.

With the signing came the understanding that our Muslims brothers and sisters here will continue to be vigilant against those who may want to carry out attacks here, or at least use the province as a springboard for attacks elsewhere.

We are happy to have Muslims as our allies and we value their role in our seemingly endless struggle against terror.

In an earlier editorial, we mentioned that one of our best allies in the fight against Radical Islam is actually the Muslims themselves. At least those who don’t believe in violence, extremism, and hate, and are more than willing to coexist with people of other beliefs or faiths.

This still holds true, most especially now. Aside from the information they can provide our authorities about terrorists or possible terror attacks, peace-loving Muslims also prevent the spread of radical ideology by making sure others don’t fall into this path, or by openly rejecting that ideology outright.

Preventing an attack, thwarting the spread of intolerant ideology, and stopping someone from becoming disciple of hate and terror is far more effective in fighting terror than being able to hit back harder after we have been struck a blow.

Cebu has been blessed to have been spared so far from terror attacks that have victimized cities all over the country, including Metro Manila. And this excellent safety record is largely thanks to our Muslim brothers and sisters here.

It is with their help that we hope to keep this clean record for as long as we can.
