Separation

TO THE QUICK - Jerry Tundag - The Freeman

The buzz phrase gripping America these days is “separation of families.” This refers to the forced separation of children from their parents after getting caught sneaking illegally into the United States at its southern border with Mexico. It is the clearest indication yet of the growing hypocrisy eating up America and the relentless bias of its media against their own president.

One would have thought that America can very well be divided on domestic issues but not on foreign policy, especially that which clearly has a lasting effect on American life itself. The protection of a country’s borders against any and all threats is the duty and responsibility of any national leader.

But some Americans, led or egged on by a biased media that has never forgiven Donald Trump for winning the presidency, would rather have illegal immigrants break US laws at the border than give their own president a chance. To discredit and demonize Trump, they shamelessly omit certain facts that would have given the issue context and made the story whole.

Yes, children are being separated from their parents. That is a fact. But it is a fact as well that border officials are not arbitrarily separating families just for the heck of it, or as if it is the coolest thing on earth to do. The separation of children from parents caught in conflict with the law is a globally accepted action to protect the children themselves.

But nobody has introduced that fact into the picture. Worse, had the children not been separated but instead thrown in jail along with their parents, a far greater uproar would have ensued, and Trump would still be demonized. The great American conspiracy from within could not have been more pronounced.

Another fact that is being shamelessly omitted is that the parents of these children are neither paragons of innocence nor hapless victims of American injustice. These parents knew exactly what they were doing. They knew the consequences of their actions. That they still did what they did makes them culpable. They are in no way victims.

True, these illegal immigrants may have tried to flee hunger, persecution, violence, or some other form of conflict in their own countries. But it is no longer the obligation of America to open its arms and say “give me your weak, you sick, and your hungry.” New realities have rearranged what countries and people want to do and what they can actually do.

Besides, it is sheer hypocrisy and outright bad taste to pretend to be so accommodating and gracious to illegal immigrants and yet so hard, arbitrary, and unreasonable to reject those who want to enter legally, either to earn honestly and contribute to American society, or just to spend their own money on a visit as tourists. What a freaking shameful time for America.
