Agua de Mayo

I recently asked my mother if she has any memory of dancing in the rain. Naturally, the answer was a resounding yes. As the month of May draws near, I instantly recall the early rains of May or what my family calls Agua de Mayo.

The first rains in the month of May always signified something almost spiritual in nature. These rains were often sought out and welcomed by tradition as soothing, healing, holy rains.

Agua de Mayo was commonly known as a blessed day.

The term Agua de Mayo however, when used  as an expression,  also signifies something that comes just at the right moment. When we say in Spanish, “Me viene como Agua de Mayo” this signifies how something comes just at the right moment, thus making someone very happy.

I am certain at some point in our lives each one of us has experienced that unexpected moment that simply put everything into place. Whether it be that surprise bonus, job promotion, your best friend suddenly visiting you from out of town at a time you needed him the most, or that perfect life changing opportunity just when you felt like giving up, these moments surely make us feel blessed.

And just like the first rains of May where our childhood left us with fond memories, it also left us with that feeling that blessings come when we least expect them.
