HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Freeman

I got this email from reader Martin Lanete, maybe a relative of the PBA star: “Unsay ikasulti mo, Sir, aning mga ads nga nag-ingon: See posters and flyers for details?”

***

My take is that the advertiser wants to make us resourceful by forcing us to look where to find the posters and flyers.

Nombert Acido, president of a mountaineering group called “No Mountain Too High,” sent me an invitation to join their summer mountain trek in Mindoro. I said the spirit is always willing but the knees are weak. And that's putting it mildly.

***

Mr. Acido, apparently, doesn't know my state of health. Any acid test I'd take, Sir Acido, might hasten my final climb ... The few hills I climbed when I was young and sexy, er, full of vitality are enough for me to cherish and remember by.

Yesterday (April 9) was “Araw ng Kagitingan,” a holiday, to honor the brave Pinoy soldiers who fought in World War II. In Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA, it's called Bataan Day to honor the countless GIs from that place who fought and died in Bataan.

New Mexico, especially the city of Las Cruses, lost many sons in Bataan while a few survived the Death March. The community named a street after Bataan and erected a memorial on whose walls were engraved the names of the native sons who died for freedom and the American flag in Bataan.

I have almost forgotten Dondon Hontiveros as a celebrated hotshot from the old Cebu Gems, now playing in the PBA for the Alaska Aces, until last Saturday night when he did an epic revival of his marksmanship, burning the hoops with seven triples. Which saved Alaska from almost certain defeat.

OVERHEARD. A couple nearly split up during the Holy Week when the husband tongue-lashed his wife for what she told her mahjong partners. She said: “Si Buddy (not his real name) mag-duster na ug panty magabii tungod sa kalimuot.” Someone told the husband about what the wife said on the mahjong table and blew his top. “Ka wa gyuy batasan nimo oy,” the husband berated the wife who asked for pardon and was pardoned.
