Visayas independence? An option to consider!

Is Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA) moving quickly to do reforms via a Constituent Assembly (con-ass)? I certainly hope not! While I completely understand why Pres. Arroyo has to listen to her allies because many of them, like Senate President Franklin Drilon have left her, House Speaker Jose de Venecia has seen and grabbed the opportunity to sell what he was selling to us a year ago… to shift to a Parliamentary form of government, mind you, without even mentioning a Federal system and do this by a Con-ass. We didn't buy this idea a year ago, we're still not buying it now!

Let me say it clear in this corner that we must shout to the President not to fall into the trap of Speaker Joe de Venecia (JDV) because a Con-ass means turning this present Congress into a Constituent Assembly, a Congress that is very much a part of what ails this nation, a Congress that the Filipino people cannot and will never give their trust! If GMA agrees with JDV to act quickly through a Con-ass, people will think that this would be GMA's way to divert the attention of the people away from the current political problems she is facing today. If you ask me, it's a wrong move!

Like what we've said in our column yesterday, GMA's Presidency has been mortally wounded, she can never come back to the way things used to be. She must move for genuine reforms even at the expense of her friends like JDV. In short, she should do this shift not just to a Parliamentary form of government, but also to a Federal system of government, through a Constitutional Convention (concon). Sure, it would take some time, but that's precisely what happened to this country… when politicians make haste and end up making waste. I suggest that we Cebuanos be vigilant about this and send GMA a message of our displeasure. She must listen also to us otherwise, we might as well seek other options like the Visayas Independence.

Here's a very interesting email that I got from Josenilo dela Cruz: "GMA is not just the President of Metro manila, where people are clamoring for her resignation, let all Filipinos know that there is a silent majority who want to march toward progress. This is best reflected on the Cebuanos and majority of Visayan-speaking populace who overwhelmingly rejected an actor for a president. The recent developments in Visayas, Mindanao, and Bicol region, regarding local governments plan to set up republics only reflects the frustrations of a people fed up with the fraction of a populace called Metro manila trying to oust the President.

Clearly this demands of resignation is pure harassment of the Presidency, so that they can proceed with their own agenda. Now is the time to replace this alleged "people power" in manila with a more organized collective group of local governments from the Provinces. We, people of the provinces must declare our intentions of marching to progress and not into chaos.

Now is the time to declare what we shall call "Probinsya Power" and let these Manilans know that they just cannot dictate the course of our collective national history in the making. Even a one page Declaration of Support for the Presidency in a national daily news is enough to shock these morons in Manila who are being exploited by small groups who have agenda other than for our own collective development.

We in the provinces have a lot more power in our hands to influence the situation ongoing in manila right now. Just consider the Bicolanon's supply of electricity and their plan to cut off supply to these morons should the President be forced to resign. That's more than "people power" in the real sense. Certainly there are a lot more things we could cut off from these morons. We are the Provinces, and we are the ones who supply them most of their needs. From a citizen fed up with Manila's imperialism. J. Argawanon jajafamfin@yahoo.com.

Indeed, Josenilo is right… Metro Manila will die if we in the Provinces don't continue to feed her with our produce. But how dare them think that they can also decide the fate of this country without consulting us? Think of it. There is already talk about another Mindanao Independence Movement, this time by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. Strangely, I haven't heard a peep from a Manila columnist accusing Mayor Durterte of sedition. The same talk is now coming from Chavit Singson who also brought into the table the creation of an Ilocos Republic… and no one has tasked him for blurting this out. What about us in Cebu? I know that today, true-blooded Cebuanos want to have an independent Cebu or for the Visayas… the only thing missing is that someone that they can trust to carry the flag of independence. We should seriously consider this option at this time.
