MANILA, Philippines — In anticipation of the start of the rainy season next month, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has activated disaster preparedness measures to protect vulnerable communities.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. yesterday ordered police commanders to beef up their preparedness to ensure that their personnel are ready for flood and typhoon response operations before the start of the wet season.

Nartatez said police units in flood and landslide-prone areas should coordinate with local government units to plan out strategies for disasters and natural calamities, such as preemptive evacuation, traffic management and rescue operations.

“We are reminding all commanders to inspect rescue equipment, prepare deployment teams and maintain 24/7 readiness during periods of heavy rainfall and tropical cyclones,” Nartatez said in a statement.

Quick reaction teams and search-and-rescue units are ready to respond during floods brought by storms, Nartatez said.

He added that PNP regional offices are preparing assistance desks in coordination with disaster response agencies.

“Our personnel are ready to assist in rescue, evacuation and humanitarian operations whenever needed,” Nartatez said.

He urged the public to do its share by cooperating with authorities and staying alert for government advisories.
