MANILA, Philippines — A Filipino has been captured in Ukraine while fighting alongside Russian forces.

Raymon Santos Gumangan, of Alcala Pangasinan, became a prisoner of war in Ukraine.

In a video, Gumangan said he left for Russia in September 2024 for employment.

He ended up working in the Russian military and was deployed to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war.

He appealed for help to return to the Philippines.

According to his son, Gumangan found the job online.

In a letter sent to the International Committee of the Red Cross dated Sep. 17, 2025, Gumangan informed his family that he was detained in a Ukrainian prison on Sept. 2 last year.
