MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) yesterday vowed to uphold vigilance as it prepares for simultaneous prayer rallies organized by the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) and another group from Nov. 16 to 18 in Manila and Quezon City.

Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said they recognize the right of Filipinos to freely practice their religion.

“Our task is to ensure that these rallies, like any peaceful gathering, remain safe for both the participants and the community,” Nartatez said.

More than 15,000 police personnel will be deployed to Rizal Park in Manila for the INC rally as well as other key sites, including the EDSA people power monument, House of Representatives, Senate, Quirino Grandstand and Liwasang Bonifacio.

The Quezon City Police District will deploy at least 1,000 QCPD personnel to secure another prayer rally organized by the United People’s Initiative also from Nov. 16 to 18 at the EDSA people power monument.

According to QCPD spokesperson Lt. Col. Febie Madrid, the group expects around 300,000 attendees per day.

Madrid said prayer rally organizers have sent a letter to Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte seeking approval for the event.

Madrid said the United People’s Initiative has been actively promoting the event on social media and inviting various sectors to participate.

The QCPD’s initial deployment of 1,000 police may be adjusted depending on the final crowd estimate and the results of coordination meetings with the city government, Madrid said.

“For now, 1,000 personnel will be sufficient, but the number could still change as we finalize our preparations,” she said.

The QCPD is also coordinating with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority to address traffic congestion along EDSA, similar to what occurred during the Trillion Peso March on Sept. 21.

The prayer rally by the United People’s Initiative will take place after the INC decided to move its gathering from the EDSA people power monument to Rizal Park in Manila to avoid traffic jams in Quezon City.

Nartatez said the PNP had coordinated with other government agencies to ensure the safety of those participating in the rallies.

“We will be visible, vigilant and ready to respond to any situation that may arise,” he said.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno earlier announced the suspension of in-person classes in the city from Nov. 17 to 18 to give way to the INC rally. — Ghio Ong
