MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolted Surigao del Sur yesterday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs said the quake occurred at 2:22 p.m. and its epicenter was located 21 kilometers south of Marihatag town.

The temblor, which was tectonic in origin, was felt at Intensity 3 in Bislig City, and Intensity 2 in Cagwait town.

Instrumental Intensities 2 and 1 were recorded in Tandag, Surigao del Sur and Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte, respectively.

The quake was not expected to generate aftershocks or cause damage to property.

Early on the same day, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake rocked the nearby town of Lingig.

The temblor occurred at 2:46 a.m. and its epicenter was located 112 kilometers north of Lingig.

Another quake of similar magnitude shook Davao Occidental at 2:23 a.m. Its epicenter was located 206 kilometers south of Sarangani Island in Sarangani town, state seismologists said.
