MANILA, Philippines — Four fishermen remained missing yesterday while their two companions have been rescued after their fishing boat encountered rough sea conditions in the waters off Surigao del Norte.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said its station in Surigao del Norte has been coordinating with concerned government agencies in search and rescue operations for the four fishermen.

Jesmar Besing, 36, and Joseph Mapalo, 35, who said they swam together until they drifted toward Bohol Sea, were rescued by a passing fishing boat. They suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The PCG said the six departed from Barangay Canlanipa in Surigao City on Feb. 28 for a fishing venture in the waters off Limasawa Island.

The bow of the boat was damaged off the coast of San Ricardo, Southern Leyte, causing seawater to enter the vessel.
