Mindanao flood victims receive aid

Sheila Crisostomo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Victims of floods spawned by an intertropical convergence zone in Soccsksargen (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos) have received assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

DSWD Assistant Secretary Romel Lopez said the agency distributed more than P3.2 million worth of relief goods to affected families.

The assistance consisted of food and non-food items, which were sent as “resource augmentation” to concerned local government units (LGUs) in Cotabato and Sarangani.

“The DSWD field office in the region is continuously validating and monitoring affected families as well as profiling internally displaced persons in evacuation centers,” Lopez said.

Data showed a total of 19,124 families or 92,319 people from Kabacan, Pikit and Glan in Sarangani were displaced by the bad weather.

Lopez said the DSWD is continuously delivering family food packs and other relief items to flood-affected areas.

“The DSWD will continue to coordinate with concerned LGUs to determine other services needed by their constituents,” he said.
