MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City government has launched a new initiative that will provide financial assistance of P1,500 per quarter to indigent persons with disabilities (PWDs).

In a statement yesterday, the city government said it has initially enrolled 700 indigent PWDs to its social welfare assistance program, which will last for a year.

The city government said it aims to register 8,000 beneficiaries with the program this year.

“PWDs receive very limited support from different agencies of the government. We initiated this program to help their families, especially now that the cost of basic commodities is rising,” Mayor Joy Belmonte said in Filipino.

The program, which was enacted through a city ordinance signed last year, covers indigent PWDs in Quezon City who do not receive any other financial aid from national government agencies such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Social Security System and Government Service Insurance System.

Its priorities include those who are bedridden, with severe health conditions that seriously impair normal life, solo parents who struggle to provide for their children, solo parents living with a child with disability, displaced PWD workers living alone and those living with senior citizen parents.

Those who wish to be part of the program have to submit all documentary requirements to the nearest Persons with Disability Affairs Office district office in their area.
