6 dead as jeep crashes into truck in Sorsogon

MANILA, Philippines — Six people, including two teachers, died while 14 others were injured when a passenger jeepney collided with a cargo truck in Castilla, Sorsogon on Friday afternoon.

Marible Pardillo, 45, and Karen Maquinana, 45, both teachers at the San Rafael National High School; Amparo Bajaro, 60; Heidy Albao, 58; Erik Dino Deonida, 19, and Janelle Abarientos, 17, were pronounced dead on arrival in a hospital.

Lt. Col. Ma. Luisa Calubaquib, Bicol police spokesperson, said the accident occurred in Barangay San Rafael at around 3:45 p.m.

Citing a police report, Calubaquib said the jeepney, which came from Legazpi City, was bound for Sorsogon City when the driver counter-flowed along a sharp curve.

The jeepney crashed into an Isuzu wing van in the opposite direction.

The jeepney driver, Rodolfo Licup, 53, and the injured passengers were taken to the Sorsogon Provincial Hospital for treatment.

The truck driver, Marlon Lorenzo, 51, was taken into custody.
