Magnitude 7.3 quake jolts Davao Occidental

MANILA, Philippines — There was no tsunami threat even after a magnitude 7.3 earthquake shook parts of Mindanao yesterday.

“Based on data provided by the sea level monitoring station in Mati City in Davao Oriental, no sea level changes were monitored,” the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in an advisory.

Phivolcs said the temblor was monitored 352 kilometers south of Sarangani in Davao Occidental at around 2:06 p.m.

The tectonic quake had a depth of 64 kilometers.

Instrumental Intensity 2 was recorded in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Glan and Kiamba in Sarangani; General Santos City, and Tupi, Sto. Niño, Koronadal City and T’Boli in South Cotabato.

Instrumental Intensity 1 was recorded in Kidapawan City in Cotabato; Maitum and Maasim in Sarangani; Tantangan, Lake Sebu, Tampakan, Suralla and Norala in South Cotabato, and Zamboanga City.

Phivolcs said damage and aftershocks were expected from the quake.
