666 kilos of pork products seized in Negros Occidental

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The African swine fever (ASF) task force in Negros Occidental seized pork products weighing 666 kilos from Oct. 15 to 19.

Provincial veterinarian Dr. Placeda Lemana said the banned items, which were confiscated at various ports, originated from Iloilo, Cebu and Manila.

Lemana said some of the confiscated pork products were shipped back to their points of origin.

Negros Occidental banned the entry of hogs and pork products from Luzon, Mindanao and Eastern Visayas, which have confirmed cases of the swine flu disease.

It recently banned the entry of hogs and pork products from Panay island and Guimaras after ASF was detected in Oton, Iloilo.

Negros Occidental, which has a P6-billion swine industry, is the top backyard hog producer in the country. It supplies between 8,000 to 12,000 heads to other provinces per month.
