7 NPA leaders surrender in Agusan, Zamboanga del Norte

MANILA, Philippines — Seven ranking members of the New People’s Army (NPA) have surrendered in Agusan del Norte and Zamboanga del Norte.

Rogelio Gerondo Jr., secretary and head of a sub-regional operations command; Ruek Namansulay, front operational command head; political officers Maricel Lunsayan and Rexon Guinar Sr., and medic Nita Guinar were with the NPA’s North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee, Brig. Gen. Adonis Ariel Orio, 402nd Infantry Brigade commander, said.

He said the surrenderees turned over two M16 rifles, an M14 and two caliber .45 pistols.

In Zamboanga del Norte, Benedicto Granada and his wife Gina, deputy secretary and secretary, respectively of a defunct NPA guerrilla unit, surrendered to the 97th Infantry Battalion led by Lt. Col. Nolasco Corderos Jr. in Barangay Del Pilar in Piñan, Zamboanga del Norte.

Brig. Gen. Leonel Nicolas said the Army would assist the couple for inclusion in the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program or E-CLIP for them to receive immediate cash assistance worth P15,000 and livelihood aid worth P50,000.

In Negros Occidental, four NPA rebels were killed in an encounter with Army soldiers in Sitio Amilis, Barangay Bi-ao in Binalbagan yesterday.

Brig. Gen. Inocencio Pasaporte of the 303rd Infantry Brigade said two M16 rifles with an M203 grenade launcher, an M14 assault rifle and a caliber .45 pistol were recovered as the comrades of the slain rebels fled the scene. – Roel Pareño, Gilbert Bayoran
