MANILA, Philippines — President Duterte was expected to decide on who he would appoint as the next chief of the country’s 220,000-strong police force yesterday.

During a meeting with some Cabinet members on Monday, Duterte said he already has a list of the possible successors of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos, who will reach the mandatory age of 56 a day before the May 9 polls.

“But it will be made public tomorrow (May 3). I will review the whole recommendation (of the interior department) including what they have done, the whole biodata of contenders and their previous tasks in government,” Duterte said.

The meeting was held on Monday night but the public address was aired yesterday morning. Malacañang had not announced Duterte’s decision as of last night.

In a text message, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año told The STAR he was still waiting for the President’s decision.

Carlos previously said he is open to an extension of his tour of duty.

Año said the list he had submitted to Duterte contained the names of two senior PNP officials.
