MANILA, Philippines — The National Capital Region Police Office will strictly implement the ban on firecrackers in Metro Manila during the Yuletide season, NCRPO director Maj. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. said yesterday.

“This is in line with a resolution (encouraging) all city mayors regarding the total banning of firecrackers,” Danao told reporters in an interview. He did not elaborate on the resolution.

Danao said the ban is to ensure the safety of the public during the holidays.

The national government prohibited firecrackers last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Danao pointed out only firecrackers are banned and not pyrotechnic devices.

While they have not received any specific security threat, Danao said police officers will not lower their guard against possible attacks, especially from terrorist groups.

These include security checkpoints and roving patrols on busy streets and areas in Metro Manila.

“We will prioritize the campaign against terrorism,” Danao said.

Open pipe mufflers still prohibited

As Christmas and New Year approach, the Muntinlupa City government reminded residents yesterday that motorists who drive vehicles with open pipe mufflers and modifiers would be apprehended and fined P2,500.

In a statement, the city government said those who drive vehicles with aftermarket mufflers that emit excessive noise would be apprehended in accordinance with the Muntinlupa Traffic Code, which states that “no private person shall use sirens, bells, horns, whistles or similar gadgets that emit exceptionally loud or startling sounds.”

The city government also reminded the public of the ban on firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices. Individuals who violate the ban would be fined P1,000 to P5,000 while commercial establishments caught selling firecrackers face having their permit and license to operate revoked.
