MANILA, Philippines — The Senate has been urged to act on two House measures seeking to expand hospitals in Eastern Visayas and assist other medical centers overwhelmed by the pandemic.

House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez of Leyte and his wife, Tingog party-list Rep. Yedda Marie Romualdez, authored the twin bills that are pending in the Senate plenary.

The proposals seek to increase the bed capacities of the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center in Tacloban and the Schistomiasis Hospital in Palo town.

“We are confident that the Senate is one with our goal to pass these bills into law, to help struggling hospitals keep up with the increasing number of patients, especially now with the pandemic,” Romualdez said.

The couple lauded Sen. Bong Go for pushing for the measures’ passage.

Nursing exams

Meanwhile, Speaker Lord Allan Velasco commended the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) for pushing through with the 2021 Nursing Licensure Examination in July instead of November.

The move is meant to augment the country’s medical workforce.

Velasco issued the statement after PRC chairman Teofilo Pilando Jr. informed him about the July NLE board exams.
