MANILA, Philippines — Active COVID-19 cases in San Juan City have decreased by at least 80 percent, Mayor Francis Zamora said yesterday.

Zamora said from a high of 1,296 cases at the peak of the surge last April 12, the number went down to 254 as of yesterday, a decrease of 80.4 percent.

The occupancy rate at the city’s quarantine facilities also went down, he said, citing as an example Kalinga Center, where only 57 of the 138 COVID-19 beds have patients an occupancy rate of 41.3 percent.

The newly opened 52-bed Bahay Kaagapay isolation facility is 17.31 percent occupied with just nine patients.

The situation at the San Juan Medical Center has also improved as only 35 or 46.66 percent of the beds are occupied.

The city’s vaccination drive is in full swing, with around 1,500 residents receiving COVID-19 jabs developed by pharmaceutical firms Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Sinovac.

Despite the improving situation in San Juan, Zamora urged residents to remain vigilant and continue observing public health protocols to prevent another suge.

“This is not the time to lower our guards and become complacent,” he said in a statement.
