GCQ extended in Northern Samar

Miriam Desacada - The Philippine Star

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines — Northern Samar will remain under general community quarantine or GCQ starting today until Nov. 17.

Gov. Edwin Ongchuan requested the GCQ extension due to the continuing spike in the number of coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19 cases in 22 of the province’s 24 towns.

The Department of Health said Northern Samar has 379 active cases as of yesterday.

Ongchuan said they would suspend the acceptance of locally stranded individuals (LSIs) while the province is under GCQ.

“It will help contain and prevent the spread of the disease and guarantee that our LSIs would receive adequate medical attention when they return to the province,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases or IATF in Western Visayas approved the requests of three local government units in Negros Occidental to also bar the entry of LSIs.

In a resolution dated Oct. 31, the regional IATF said the ban on the return of LSIs in Binalbagan town, which took effect on Monday, is until Nov. 16.

LSIs are barred in Manapla and Cadiz City from Nov. 5 to 18 and Nov. 2 to 6, respectively.

The travel ban aims to contain the spread of the virus and decongest quarantine facilities. – Gilbert Bayoran
