Jailed activist asks court permission to visit baby’s wake

MANILA, Philippines — Detained human rights activist Reina Mae Nasino yesterday asked a Manila court to allow her to attend the wake and burial of her three-month-old baby who died of pneumonia last week.

In her urgent motion for furlough, Nasino, through her lawyers, “implores, nay, pleads and begs” the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 37 to allow her to see her baby, River, for one last time.

River’s wake is held at the La Funeraria Rey in Pandacan.

Nasino, a Kadamay coordinator, was among the three activists arrested during a police raid in November last year for alleged possession of firearms and explosives.

She was moved to the Manila city jail female dormitory a day after giving birth at the Fabella Hospital on July 1.

Nasino was one of the 22 detainees who have petitioned the Supreme Court for temporary release during the pandemic.

President Duterte was saddened by the death of Nasino’s baby but he could not do anything about it, presidential spokesman Harry Roque said.
