MPD detainee dies of suspected COVID-19

MANILA, Philippines — A 46-year-old detainee of the Manila Police District (MPD) died of suspected COVID-19 hours after he was rushed to the hospital on Sunday night.

Cpl. Raymart Cosme, duty officer at the MPD Station 11, said he was doing his rounds when Randy Pelicano complained of severe stomach ache and high fever at around 6 p.m.

Seeing Pelicano in pain, Cosme said he immediately sought the assistance of the station’s health unit personnel who brought the detainee to the Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center.

Pelicano succumbed to blood infection at around 11:20 p.m., according to attending phyisician Mary Jane Ramores.

Police said Pelicano reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.

He was arrested on drug charges on Aug. 10.

Meanwhile, 28 barangays in Taguig City will receive P500,000 each to boost strategies against COVID-19.

In an online meeting with the barangay captains yesterday, Mayor Lino Cayetano announced that they can now claim the financial assistance.

Last March, the city government provided P500,000 to each barangays to fight COVID-19.
