Parañaque issues EO banning discrimination vs patients, frontliners

MANILA, Philippines — The Parañaque City government has prohibited any form of discrimination against medical frontliners and persons infected with coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19.

Mayor Edwin Olivarez on Friday signed Executive Order (EO) 2020-027, which prevents discrimination against medical and non-medical frontliners as well as persons under investigation or monitoring for COVID-19.

Under the EO, violators will face criminal and administrative charges based on the Bayanihan Act and the city’s ordinances.

Among the violations are denying admission of possible COVID-19 carriers to hospitals and supermarkets as well as physical, mental, verbal or online harassment.

Olivarez said he issued the EO to protect health workers and COVID-19 patients from discrimination.

The city council of Manila passed the same measure last week.
