After Taal eruption, ASF hits Batangas

BATANGAS, Philippines — After being affected by the eruption of Taal Volcano, a Batangas town has been hit by African swine fever (ASF).

The local government implemented yesterday a lockdown in Barangay Molinete in Laurel town to prevent the spread of ASF in the province.

Some 900 hogs infected by the virus have been culled, according to Krisel Ragas of the provincial veterinary office.

The Bureau of Animal Industry confirmed the outbreak of ASF in Barangay Molinete.

Ragas said there are around 500 backyard hog operators in the area.

In Pangasinan, the town of Urbiztondo was placed on lockdown to prevent the entry of pork products as a safeguard against ASF.

Mayor Martin Raul Sison II ordered the lockdown after the ASF spread in the towns of Bayambang, Malasiqui, Basista and San Carlos City.
