Continuing registration draws 4 million voters

MANILA, Philippines — More than four million people participated in the continuing registration of voters from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30 despite the approval of measures in both Houses of Congress for the deferment of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections next year.

A total of 4,097,003 applications have been filed since Aug. 1, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) reported yesterday.

The poll body said at least 1,014,607 of those who registered are aged 15 to 17.

Calabarzon has the highest number of regular voter applicants at 494,833; followed by Metro Manila with 383,474, and Central Luzon, 349,243.

Eastern Visayas has the highest number of registrants for the SK elections with 110,865; followed by Western Visayas, 107,781, and Ilocos, 91,667.

Comelec records show that there are more regular female applicants at 1,611,830 compared to 1,470,566 regular male applicants.

There are also more female voters for the SK elections with 538,429 compared to only 476,178 male applicants.
