Gilbert Bayoran - The Philippine Star

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — A New People’s Army (NPA) camp in Negros Occidental used to manufacture and store improvised explosive devices (IEDs) was overrun following an encounter with communist guerrillas on Sunday.

Brig. Gen. Debold Sinas, Central Visayas police director, said five IEDs, a shotgun, a 38-caliber revolver, various types of ammunition and bomb materials, including almost two kilos of chemicals, were recovered in Sitio Cabilocan, Barangay Camindangan, Sipalay City.

Sinas said Roberto Tingson, 34, and Jory Mate, 38, of the NPA Yunit Milisya and a certain Amado, an alleged bombmaker, were arrested. Two other villagers were invited for questioning.

In Agusan del Sur, four NPA rebels surrendered over the weekend.

First Lt. Amadeuz Celestial, civil-military operations officer of the 60th Infantry Battalion, said the surrenderees were with the Pulang Bagani Command of the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee.

Celestial said the rebel returnees, who are members of the Umayamnon-Manobo tribe, also turned over their guns. – Michael Punongbayan
