Radioman stabbed dead in Butuan

Artemio Dumlao - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — A radio commentator was stabbed dead in Butuan City yesterday morning, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) said.

Francis Patindol of dxJM was with his friends in front of the Alba Copy Center located on Narra Road, Barangay New Society, when he was killed at around 10 a.m.

Patindol suffered a stab wound in the chest and was taken to the MJ Santos Hospital where he died while being treated.

The assailant, identified as Ola Saransamen, fled after the killing.

If the killing is proven to be work-related, Patindol would be the 187th journalist killed in the line of duty in the country since 1986 and the 13th under the Duterte administration, according to the NUJP.

Undersecretary Joel Sy-Egco, executive director of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security, said the incident was not work-related.

Egco said the assailant, who was drunk, got irked when the victim and his group ignored him.

He said the assailant butted in as the victim was talking to his friends.
