TUGUEGARAO, Cagayan, Philippines — The Cagayan Valley police received the first batch of new high-powered firearms and ammunition on Monday.

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Oscar Albayalde turned over 480 M16 rifles, 350 units of 9mm pistols, various types of ammunition and accessories to two police field units in the region.

Albayalde said the new guns and ammunition are expected to heighten the police offensive against New People’s Army rebels.

“I want all PNP units to conduct counter actions against the insurgents and bring back all the firearms and equipment of police and military targets acquired through ambushes,” Albayalde said.
