AFP gets 50,000 new guns

Michael Punongbayan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of National Defense (DND) announced yesterday its acquisition of 50,000 high-caliber handguns from a leading Filipino arms manufacturer.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and ARMSCOR president and chief executive officer Martin Tuason signed the contract to proceed with the production of the firearms.

The DND said the deal involves the manufacture of .45-caliber handguns for use of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Lorenzana said the DND’s partnership with ARMSCOR was in line with its efforts toward witnessing a “rebirth of defense self-reliance.”

“The initiative of optimizing our local resources contributes to the development of our economic and labor industries by providing jobs for Filipinos and contributing to economic growth - positive effects that far outweigh the DND’s importation spending,” he said.

Lorenzana said the acquisition of the firearms “signifies the trust in ARMSCOR’s craftsmanship and expertise in manufacturing guns.”

“ARMSCOR supports the Filipino people and the AFP,” Tuason said.

The DND and ARMSCOR hoped that the partnership would set the standards in procuring local materials for future government projects.
