Wife seeks help for ‘punished’ Manila cop

MANILA, Philippines — The wife of a police officer, who was reported to be in critical condition after being punished by a Manila Police District (MPD) official, is asking for financial assistance in order for her husband to undergo a heart bypass operation.

Senior Police Officer 3 Mario Asilo, 48, is currently confined at the Medical Center Manila’s intensive care unit but will be transferred to the Philippine General Hospital as soon as his relatives come up with the money for his operation, according to his wife, Marissa.

Asilo collapsed after Chief Inspector Reynante Parlade, MPD Special Weapons and Tactics commander, forced him to do squat thrusts for allegedly failing to make a proper salute when Asilo passed Parlade on Monday.

Cardiologist Dr. Camilo Te said Asilo is being treated for “fatal arrhythmia secondary to acute coronary syndrome.”

Witnesses said Parlade forced Asilo to perform the exercise despite being informed of the policeman’s heart condition.

MPD director Chief Superintendent Rolando Anduyan said he will wait for Camp Crame’s Internal Affairs Office report before taking any action.
