MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City Police District (QPCD) has tapped civilian volunteers to “monitor online activities” of the city’s residents, supposedly in the fight against crimes in cyberspace.
More than 350 individuals yesterday took their oath to become anti-cybercrime volunteers of the QCPD.
In their pledge, the volunteers vowed to “report all cybercrime and cyber-related offenses” that could threaten residents and the city government to the police.
QCPD director Chief Superintendent Guillermo Eleazar assured the public that any information from the volunteers would be properly vetted by their investigators.
Online privacy would not be breached even as the volunteers would report online activities they tag as suspicious to the police, Eleazar said.
This comes as the QCPD inaugurated the office of its own Anti-Cybercrime Team (ACT) yesterday.
He said establishing QCPD ACT would be beneficial in tracking down syndicates who are involved in “sextortions” and maintaining cybersex dens in the city.
