LANAO DEL SUR, Philippines — The military has intensified patrols in Lake Lanao to guard against the Islamic State-inspired Maute and Abu Sayyaf groups from using it to escape from the lakeside city of Marawi.
Lt. Col. Jo-Ar Herrera, spokesman of Task Force Marawi, said the terrorist groups used the lake to bring weapons into the city.
“We have increased visibility, we increased the patrol in the lake,” Herrera said.
He said security was beefed up after the capture of a Maute militant who was transporting ammunition and extracting wounded terrorists through the lake.
He said patrols were also conducted along the lake shores and in local communities that have reported suspicious activities.
The military official did not discount members of the terrorist groups have managed to slip out of Marawi to escape.
Meanwhile, clearing operations in the besieged city have continued, with troops conducting house-to-house sweeps to clear them of improvised bombs.
Herrera said areas have to be cleared before retrieval teams come in to recover the remains of civilians killed by the Maute terrorists.
The remains are transported to Iligan City for forensic examination and identification.
