Magnitude 5.4 quake shakes Zambales

A 5.5 earthquake struck Zambales province on Thursday evening, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. PHIVOLCS

MANILA, Philippines (Updated 11:36 p.m.)  — A magnitude 5.4 earthquake jolted Zambales on Thursday evening, a bulletin from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said, generating possible aftershocks but no damage is expected.

The tremor struck at a depth of 88 kilometers and was located at 15.10°N, 120.04°E - 019 km N 41° W of San Marcelino, Zambales.

The government agency said that the quake was tectonic in origin and hit at around 10:27 this evening.

PHIVOLCS said that aftershocks were possible although there was no expected damage from the initial tremblor.

The quake was reported by the Mediterranean Seismological Centre as magnitude 5.4 while PHIVOLCS put it at magnitude 5.5.

The earthquake was reported at:

  • Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Quezon City, Pateros and Malolos, Bulacan
  • Intensity III (weak) in Tagaytay City; Talisay, Batangas; San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan; Marilao, Bulacan; San Miguel, Tarlac, Pasay City; Makati City, Mandaluyong, Manila City, Parañaque, and Taguig City 
  • Intensity II (slightly felt) in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija; Bacoor, Cavite and San Jacinto, Pangasinan.
