PNP to probe gov’t housing takeover

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police is willing to help the National Housing Authority (NHA) identify those convincing members of Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay) to occupy vacant units at government housing projects.

“We are going to investigate that,” PNP spokesman Senior Superintendent Dionardo Carlos told a press briefing yesterday.

Kadamay took over 5,107 units in six housing projects in Pandi and San Jose del Monte City in Bulacan on March 8.

Carlos said they would also look into complaints that the housing board of the PNP is to blame for the delay in the award of housing units to policemen. He said policemen have been complying with the requirements of the housing board.

“There are units that had been occupied by our members and there are those whose applications are still being processed,” Carlos said.

He said those who wish to avail themselves of units in government housing projects should also go through the process and comply with the requirements.

Meanwhile, Malacañang appealed to members of Kadamay not to use force as the urban poor group bared plans to occupy other housing projects.

”The NHA had shown patience and we hope Kadamay will be faithful to their... social contract,” said presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella.
