MANILA, Philippines - The European Union (EU) recently approved a P200-million new contribution for the peace process between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Louis Dey, acting chief for EU’s development cooperation delegation, said the P200 million would support the Philippine government’s efforts in monitoring the situation, defusing tension and creating an inclusive political platform that will unite the people of Mindanao.

Dey said the EU developed a comprehensive program to promote peace and development in the region.

“The EU and its member-states have been supporting the peace and development efforts between the Philippine government and MILF for over a decade. We will continue to be part of the journey until peace is achieved in Mindanao,” Dey said.

A team of EU officials witnessed how the peace efforts benefited more than 1,000 residents of Barangay Capbangi in Pigcawayan, North Cotabato, one of the MILF’s base commands.

Dey recently witnessed the turnover of a rice mill, a solar dryer and a warehouse to the village.

The turnover was part of the Mindanao Trust Fund, wherein the EU is one of the major contributors.

The EU has so far provided P1.17 billion to the fund.
