Davao Oriental prosecutor shot dead

MANILA, Philippines – A government prosecutor was shot dead in Mati City, Davao Oriental yesterday.

Rolando Acido had just alighted from his car in front of the the Mati City Metropolitan Trial Court when unidentified motorcycle-riding men fired at him at around 8:10 a.m., Justice Undersecretary Erickson Balmes told reporters.

Balmes said Acido died at the scene.

Acido was half-paralyzed after suffering a stroke, Balmes noted.

Police have yet to determine the identities of the gunmen and the motive for the killing.

Earlier reports said Acido was handling illegal drugs and murder cases.

In a statement, prosecutor general Claro Arellano said the National Prosecution Service of the Department of Justice condemned the killing as “cowardly” and “senseless.”

Arellano urged the police and the National Bureau of Investigation to conduct parallel probes. – With Edith Regalado
