Cavite town under state of calamity due to chikungunya

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines – Indang town in Cavite is under a state of calamity due to the rising number of chikungunya cases.

The municipal council approved a resolution declaring the state of calamity on Monday upon the recommendation of the municipal disaster risk reduction and management council, barangay officials, non-government organizations and other stakeholders.

Georgina Garcia, spokesperson for the Office of Civil Defense  and the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, said 470 chikungunya cases were recorded from January to Sept. 24.

Records show that Barangay Agusos has the most number of cases with 189; Barangay Guyam Malaki, 168; Barangay Guyam Munti, 52, and Barangay Calumpang Cerca, 25.

Garcia said local officials are conducting a cleanup drive and other activities to eliminate the breeding sites of mosquitoes that cause the disease.
